Air Relax Leg Recovery System Review

When you hear the words Leg Recovery System it sounds like something super high-tech and possibly from the future. Similarly, if you just saw the product, you might think the same. While in a sense, you’d be right as the future of recovery is now here! The Air Relax Leg Recovery System is a pair of boots that fill with air to apply pressure to your legs and promote the movement of lymphatic fluid. We recently had the opportunity to try these out first-hand and below we’ve outlined some of the details that we learned during our experience. Check out what we learned below:

What Is A Leg Recovery System?

Do you remember the electronic blood pressure cuffs that used to be in the pharmacy section of Walmart? It’s essentially a full sleeve of those that fit over your legs. While the name seems like a lot, they can more simply be referred to as compression boots or recovery boots. These boots have become popular over the past few years after prominent usage by professional athletes. Typically a high ticket item, Air Relax has brought the product to the public at a much more affordable price.

What Are The Specifications Of The Air Relax Leg Recovery System?

With the Air Relax System, there’s a lot to be considered in terms of specifications. One of the key features of the boots is their chambers, or zones, which fill with air to apply the pressure to your muscles. The Air Relax comes equipped with four zones (foot, calf, knee, and thigh) that are able to be filled in different patterns and filled to four different pressure settings. The pressure settings on the device ranges from 0-230mmHG (Level 1: 0-60 mmHg; Level 2: 60-120 mmHg; Level 3: 120-180 mmHg; Level 4: 180-230 mmHg). In addition to the varying pressure settings, users also have the ability to choose from 3 different massage modes, an auto mode, and a point mode, which allows you to select from 7 different individual zone combinations.

The boots themselves are applied like zipping up a jacket over your legs and they attach individually to the pump, which controls the entire unit and displays all the relevant information pertaining to the recovery session. The boots attach together and then to the pump via a 5 foot long silicone hose, which itself is comprised of 4 smaller hoses that each correspond to a zone on the boots. Currently available in 3 different sizes, users are able to ensure the boots fit appropriately for their height. The three sizes listed on their website are measured by the user’s inseam and are available in the following sizes: 2: 26″-30″ inseam; 3: 30″-34″ inseam; 4: 34″-38″ inseam.

The pump has a small display on it that shows the power setting, massage mode, and pressure level and allows the user to toggle between the various options with ease. The pump comes with a convenient carry handle and is powered via a 5 foot cord that needs to be plugged in to a wall outlet.

What Comes With The Air Relax System?

The Air Relax system comes with two boots that attach individually to the pump unit via a silicon hose. Users also get the pump unit itself. The system does not come standard with a carrying case, however the carrying case can be purchases separately.

Those who elect to purchase the soft-sided case will not be disappointed as it is an extremely user friendly case that includes a dual zippered compartment that is secured by both Velcro and a buckle. The outside of the case features 2 zippered compartments, of which one contains a weather resistant cover for your case keeping it out of the elements. Lastly, the case includes a small soft-sided divider that is able to be placed in a custom location inside the carrying bag.

What Do The Air Relax Boots Feel Like?

Wearing the boots is a feeling that is hard to be described. If you’ve ever had a massage where the massage therapists runs their hands all the way up your legs, squeezing along the way, you will experience a similar feeling with the Air Relax System. It truly does feel like someone is squeezing your legs and applying pressure to the specific muscle groups you target. Once you find the pressure setting that’s right for you, it’s a very relaxing feeling. However, that being said, if you select a pressure setting that’s too high, it can quickly become uncomfortable. In addition to selecting the right pressure, you’ll need to find the right mode as well.

Modes

Mode A: This mode is a peristaltic mode. It is designed to mimic the movement of waves. The system does this by filling a zone (starting in the foot) and then deflating that zone, while simultaneously starting to fill the next proximal zone. Once it gets to the thigh zone, it will once again begin in the foot.

Mode B: This mode is a sequential mode. The system starts by filling the foot zone, but rather than deflating it like Mode A, it maintains the pressure in the foot and then inflates the next proximal zone. Once all zones are full, then all zones deflate at once.

Mode C: This mode is a combination of Mode A and Mode B. The system fills all zones at once and then deflates all zones at once.

The boots will continue to work through their selected mode for 15 minutes before the device will automatically shut off.

Relief

Once you take the boots off your muscles will immediately feel refreshed. Users can expect their legs to feel lighter and may feel the rush of fresh fresh blood and lymphatic fluids into their legs.

What Makes Air Relax Different Than Other Compression Boots?

Price

While we have not tried many brands of compression boots, the most obvious difference of the Air Relax product is the price. Interested buyers can pick up their own Air Relax System for a few hundred dollars cheaper than some of the other well known brands. This could arguably be the most important difference for those who are looking for an affordable option.

Pressure

The maximum pressure setting on the Air Relax is one of the highest pressure levels available of compression boots on the market.

Case

The soft sided carrying case is another aspect that makes the Air Relax compression boots stand out. Those that are willing to make the investment into this product will appreciate the case as it is very well designed to protect your investment.

Final Thoughts

The Air Relax Leg Recovery System is a great investment for anyone looking for another recovery tool to add to their routine. These compression boots are an extremely affordable option for anyone that is often active such as runners, cyclists and triathletes who are looking for an edge in their next workout or competition. They allow you to get the benefits to your lymphatic system that you would get from movement while remaining stationary. The pressure of the boots help reduce swelling and inflammation and prepares your body for it’s next workout sooner!
