Massage Gun Sound Comparison By Decibel

What Is The Quietest Massage Gun?

If you’ve used a massage gun to relieve any sort of tension in your body, the first thing you might have noticed is the sound it makes….well that is depending on which brand of massage gun you were using. If you haven’t used one before, but maybe you’ve seen one of their really cool slow motion marketing videos, you may be in for a learning experience in this article.

The top massage guns on the market all offer varying features and levels of relief that are to be considered, but when you’re trying to use one of these devices in a public setting, there’s not much else you care about than the noise it makes and feeling comfortable using it (and maybe the price!).

There are a few massage guns that have a much quieter sound that allows them to be used in an office or the gym, but some of the others may be better suited for use in the privacy of your home (or on a construction site!). The noise level that these devices make is important to anyone considering purchasing one because if you are going to invest the money into one of these devices, you want to be able to use it as often as possible. Being able to use it as often as possible also means being able to use it in as many places as possible. Certainly any of these devices on our list could be used anywhere, but most users typically practice a certain amount of courtesy to those around them when it comes the volume of their device.

Below we’ve ranked some of the most popular massage guns on the market by the noise they make in Decibels from loudest to quietest and have provided some relative sound comparisons from industrialnoisecontrol.com in italics.

Massage Guns Ranked By Sound (from loudest to quietest)

DIY WORX Saw Massage Gun – 100-110 dB

worx reciprocatig saw massage gun

If you’re trying to save some money and have decided to DIY a massage gun out of a WORX reciprocating saw, then you may have sacrificed your ears to save your wallet. This device is by far the loudest of any option and it should come as no surprise as the power behind it is literally intended for construction work! This is a great tool for those trying to ball on a budget, but it certainly would not be our first recommendation when it comes to trying to keep the peace (although you might be able to “silence” the critics with it).

Steel mill, auto horn at 1 meter. Turbo-fan aircraft at takeoff power at 200 ft (118 dB). Riveting machine (110 dB); live rock music (108 – 114 dB). Jet take-off (at 305 meters), use of outboard motor, power lawn mower, motorcycle, farm tractor, jackhammer, garbage truck. Boeing 707 or DC-8 aircraft at one nautical mile (6080 ft) before landing (106 dB); jet flyover at 1000 feet (103 dB); Bell J-2A helicopter at 100 ft (100 dB).

TheraGun G2Pro / TimTam Power Massager V1.5 – 85-90 dB

Topping out the table for devices specifically marketed as percussion massage devices or massage guns is a tie between the TheraGun G2Pro and the TimTam Power Massager V1.5. Neither of these devices hold back in terms of sound and let you know how powerful they are by their screaming motors. They are certainly much quieter than the option above, but the sound can still be a distraction to some. The noise level of each of these devices is arguably the most common criticism from their users because they are difficult to use in a public setting without drawing attention.

Boeing 737 or DC-9 aircraft at one nautical mile (6080 ft) before landing (97 dB); power mower (96 dB); motorcycle at 25 ft (90 dB). Newspaper press (97 dB). Garbage disposal, dishwasher, average factory, freight train (at 15 meters). Car wash at 20 ft (89 dB); propeller plane flyover at 1000 ft (88 dB); diesel truck 40 mph at 50 ft (84 dB); diesel train at 45 mph at 100 ft (83 dB). Food blender (88 dB); milling machine (85 dB); garbage disposal (80 dB).

TheraGun G3Pro – 70-75 dB

Quietest massage gun

The TheraGun G3Pro was released in early 2019 and was advertised to be 50% quieter than the TheraGun G2Pro. While it is a bit quieter than we’ve listed on it’s lowest setting, for a fair comparison we want to look at it from an apples-to-apples perspective. At its highest speed setting, which is the same as the speed the G2Pro operates at, it measures in between 70-75 dB. While it is significantly quieter, it is by no means the quietest massage gun on the market. However, it could certainly be used in public at this decibel level and not really be much of a distraction to anyone.

Train Performance Gun – 70-75 dB

Train Performance Gun

The Train Performance Gun may be one of the lesser known massage guns on the market, but that may be due to the fact that the gun itself doesn’t speak up – and by that we mean you can barely hear it when it’s in use. While it looks very similar in design to the TheraGun G2Pro, this device certainly doesn’t sound like it. This device is the first on our list that could comfortably be used in a public setting and allow you to carry on a conversation without little effort while even on it’s highest speed setting.

Passenger car at 65 mph at 25 ft (77 dB); freeway at 50 ft from pavement edge 10 a.m. (76 dB). Living room music (76 dB); radio or TV-audio, vacuum cleaner (70 dB).

Hyperice Hypervolt – 65-70 dB

Ranking massage guns by sound

Hyperice was the first to develop a quieter version of a handheld percussion massager. They took several years to develop this tool and it’s clear that they took their time mastering their Quiet Glide Technology (they were probably sick of wearing earplugs while using the massage guns before it). If you were to run the Hypervolt side by side with the G2Pro or TimTam V1.5, you likely wouldn’t even be able to hear the Hypervolt as it is that much quieter than the others. For those looking massage at home without their neighbors knowing, this could be the device for you.

Conversation in restaurant, office, background music, Air conditioning unit at 100 feet. (60 dB).

TimTam Power Massager V2.0 – supposed 60 dB

Quietest massage gun

While the TimTam Power Massager V2.0 is not scheduled to be released until March of 2019, the company has been advertising the massage gun as running at a smooth 60 db. Taking some of the criticisms of their V1.5 massager, they’ve out-done themselves in the noise level reduction department. They’ve also added a TON of other new features to this device that will surely make it a crowd-pleaser. However, as we are focusing just on sheer volume for this article, this would become the quietest massage gun ever.

Final Thoughts

While sound is certainly something that many potential buyers will take into consideration, it’s not the only factor at play. It’s important that each device be evaluated for it’s full range of features and capabilities, as well as evaluating the price range that aligns with your budget.
